Come with me down the rabbit hole

Do you ever follow a path and wonder where it will take you?  Like Alice, I’ve followed many Rabbits down their little holes and into their warrens but not really understood why.  I needed to go on a journey of discovery I suppose to understood what made me tick, what was right for me, and what worked for me. Has the journey stopped? Do I now know where I am going? and What I am doing? Not really but I do have a better idea of what I want, what I enjoy and some vague idea now of how to get there.

Part of this journey was discovering what I loved about work, about what I did and what I hated.  It’s that dreaded interview question that often appears.  What do you like most about your job and your company? What do you like the least?  Like the strength and weaknesses question it’s about understanding can you remain focussed and positive even when doing things we dislike, or will you take a negative approach to the job and its requirements.

However, you can only really only answer those questions effectively once you have been on your voyage of discovery.  These days I use strengths in both these questions, and things I found difficult or challenging sometimes rather than disliking, as the are easier to spin with a positive outlook and refreshing approach to solutions and problems.

I am still doing my voyage of discovery and after 25 years of working, I think I may have found an industry and arena I like and keeps me challenged and focussed and gives me what I want.  The advantage is I now have a wealth of knowledge to draw on from having worked in various backgrounds, from Office Management, to Finance, from Law, to IT.  I now manage contracts for a living for an IT firm and at the moment I could not be happier.  This does not mean in 5 years time I will decide I need another journey and get distracted by another Rabbit, maybe Peter, this time but only time will tell.  The simple fact is I have followed my heart, and allowed myself to follow whichever path right at the given moment at time.

As a result of this I have a wealth of experience, a breadth of knowledge and the ability to know what I want. If you are starting out in the world of jobs, do temporary work, work for free with IT companies, get Internships, try different things, don’t stick with one thing as you think that’s what you should do.  That wont lead to happiness or job fulfilment.

Break free of your hutch and come with me and meet and find your adventure in Wonderland
