It’s one thing to have lovely dreams.
It’s another to have recurrent, frequent or repetitve dreams that last for years after the fact.
People I’ve spoken to have had dreams of the experience of bullying which happened years ago…on and off for the last 20-35 years for example.
Of course the memories fade, the feelings, the oppression that bullying equates to, the feelings that get shut down in order to cope with it.
And of course, the dreams featuring events from a time of trauma can fade, become less impactful and even become mundane and harmless but the fact that you can still have reminders of a trauma in your dream long after the fact is telling.
So unlike the below quotation from the 2002 film One Hour Photo, the memory doesn’t always remember to forget or erase.
It can take time, a lifetime even for some victims of trauma.
Which is why it is important to tackle bullying before its long term effects sink in.
