Go Fish

When I started my previous job as an IS Contract manager one of the first things I was given was a book called Fish and it told a story about people working in a fish market and how they worked and were productive on a day to day basis. The key to all this was their attitude to work and their ability to review the situation they were in and make a decision about it.  The same decision we all have the ability to make everyday even before we get to work.

We have all got up and thought I feel ‘awful’ this is not being a good start to the day, because we over slept, missed the train.  The choice we have is, do we let that feeling continue; or acknowledge it’s happened, it’s not great but it’s time to move on.  That is the difficulty.  Like Elsa says in Frozen sometimes you just have to let things go.  We all know that is not so easy as to lock yourself away, work through those issues and come out the other side, especially if you have meetings booked in and your emails piling up so how do you move on?

There is no big secret here, and I don’t always manage it. The trick for me, is take a deep breath, put a ‘fake smile’ on the face and throw yourselves into the tasks ahead. Most importantly is chat to your work colleagues, it is amazing what a simple 5-10 minute chat can do to lighten your mood.  Take about what you did the night before, the fact that public transport is not the best, what you have to prepare for, anything to stop your mind from brooding on the situation.

The real key to having that positive mental attitude, is choosing to be positive.  It is choosing to look on the brighter side of life. The concept of remaining positive even when things are tough will resonate with colleagues, as it will help keep everyone else’s morale higher and therefore more focussed to deal with the tasks in hand during difficulty times.

All that really leaves me to say is whose up for fishing?
