Dear all,
One of my coaching teachers often spoke of the “banquet” metaphor.
If there was a large buffet of every kind of food and drink possible, but you could not “have it all”, you would need to be purposeful in your choice, if you wanted to enjoy yourself as much as possible.
Can you imagine what it would be like, if such a banquet was available every day? Theoretically you could have something different everyday, for the rest of your life. Would you like to try something new every day? Would you repeat something already sampled? He often linked this metaphor with what he called “the sense of adventure”.
In life, there are more sights, sounds, smells, tastes and other sensations than we know what to do with. We have the capacity to receive tiny amounts. Consciously or unconsciously, we are constantly making choices about what we pay attention to, skipping the rest.
The importance of this metaphor is that the way we experience life is determined by what we pay attention to.
Would you like to be more purposeful about how you pay attention in your life?
- Stability or adventure
When you pay attention to what you already know, you feel comfortable and safe. When you are confronted with the unknown, you expose yourself to challenge and risk.
Find a way to strike a balance that keeps your life interesting but without overwhelming you. - Time span
This quote by E.L. James: “If a job’s worth doing, it’s worth doing well.”, perfectly summarizes the concept of ‘Time Span’. The benefit that you derive from an activity is often proportionate to the attention you give it. This manifests itself in both the quality of the attention as well as the length of time given to said task.
I have recently heard that multi-tasking doesn’t exist, we merely are task-switching.
Be mindful of the time you need to do a task well. - Inside or Outside
The metaphor of the banquet is something that happens outside of ourselves, but don’t forget, you also need to “check in” and notice your inner thoughts and feelings, ensure your internal wellbeing is good to. - Others
Share your attention between yourself and others, so you notice that what you do and how this affects others.
Consider how you shape your own experience. What will you give attention to? what will you enjoy from the banquet that life offers you?
I wish you that your choice leaves you and others smiling and fulfilled.
Remember the banquet is for grazing not gauging
