Hi everyone!
We get up and we do not know how the day will materialise. One day is good … Another one not so good 😉
Regardless of the weather, nothing beats feeling warmth and optimism in our hearts to face the day and the days ahead.
Today we are going to share advice from the world of coaching applicable to those moments in which we do not see things in a positive way. We are going to focus on those days when we are somewhat discouraged.
I hope that is not the case for you now, in which case this may be a “resource” that will come in handy in the future.
When things go wrong, we can become discouraged and even be tempted to abort our plans. My favorite coaching teacher often reminded us that it is rare to get what we set out to do if we give up “too early.”
How do you “reset” when things don’t go well?
When you are discouraged, what do you do to feel good again and persevere towards your goal? Or do you let things slide, and hope for better things tomorrow? In this blog we will look at how we can improve things for the better in the moment, and make everyday a better day
You may have heard of Amy Cuddy, the psychologist who has shown with research that there is a relationship between our body posture and our state of mind. Specifically, she promotes what she calls a “power pose”. For those unfamiliar with this, it is usually seen as the iconic pose carried out by Super-heroes such as Wonder-woman and Superman when standing with a gaze and a look out to the distance
The consequence of this knowledge is that we can use our physiology to cheer ourselves up.
I am going to add a subsection here to share that all emotions are healthy and I do not see the need to “repress” any. I just like to work with emotions as feedback. No judgments. It is also healthy to feel all of your emotions and be able to discuss them in a constructive way to address what caused the emotion and feeling in the first instance.
Make yourself feel better
- Positive attitude
Everything shall pass. I have shared the Persian fable over and over again.
When we don’t know how to resolve a situation, it is time to put our resolve to the test. The recommendation here is that what separates us from success is often our determination to achieve it.
In so much that if we doubt ourselves, our resolve to deliver also wains in a direct correlation to our lack of faith within our self
- Get up
Shame and worry are natural, but beware! They can be a drag. Entering negative spirals of thought distracts and deviates you from your goal. If you detect that it is happening to you, correct the course of your thoughts.
What is the best use of your time?
Don’t dismiss the negativity, embrace it as a source of energy and resolve to drive you to the end result. Acknowledge the emotions but don’t let them drive you into doing something you would regret
- Gratitude
There is so much to learn. Often what happens to us is an opportunity to learn something new. Ken Wilber talks about the experience in the form of a spiral. The lessons are repeated and allow us to move forward. They are necessary to allow is to advance, to grow, to develop.
What you have learned to overcome in unfavourable situations is a resource that you have at your disposal, for the next time you need it. What helps you overcome difficulties? What can you use from these bag of resources to help you overcome these periods of doubts
Go ahead, gather the necessary energy to go forward with determination and even enthusiasm and carve a world you want to be part of
