Ian Duncan Smith may not be the best man to quote as he was booted out soon after making his famous quiet man speech, despite later promising that he was turning the volume up.
But his words resonate nonetheless. Silence or quiet is as much a form of communication. We often talk of silent treatment or being blanked by someone. How many times have we heard the saying silence is golden?
The more you speak, the less your listener hears. The less you speak, the more grateful your listener will be. The louder you speak, the less effective you are at getting your point across.
It’s very easy to talk too much when using silence, speaking slower and listening are more powerful ways of communicating.
You may be (wrongly) perceived as quiet because you prefer to listen or you find it easier to listen, gather, analyse and then respond. You may even find writing easier than talking.
Do you prefer listening or talking?
