Hi everyone!
We get up and we do not know how the day will have dawned. One day is good .. Another one not so good 😉
Regardless of the weather, nothing beats feeling warmth and optimism in our hearts to face the day and the days ahead.
Today we are going to share advice from the world of coaching applicable to those moments in which we do not see things in a positive way, when we are somewhat discouraged.
I hope that is not the case for you now, in which case it may be a “resource” to consider in the future.
When things do go wrong, we can become discouraged and even be tempted to abort our plans. My favorite coaching teacher often reminded us that it is rare to get what we set out to do, if we give up “too early.”
How do you “reset” when things don’t go well?
When you are discouraged, what do you do to feel good again and persevere towards your goal?
You may have heard of Amy Cuddy, the psychologist who has shown with research that there is a relationship between our body posture and our state of mind. Specifically, she promotes what she calls a “power pose”.
For those of you unfamiliar with the power pose, It is most often seen when Super Heroes are standing, looking out over a view or in a deliberate standing position, with their hands on their hips standing tall, showing power, and control
The consequence of this knowledge is that we can use our physiology to cheer ourselves up.
It is important that we acknowledge all emotions and feelings. Acknowledging the bad as well as the good, helps keep a healthy, happy mindset, and addressing those feelings of sadness, neglect and fear, will always lead to a better place. As such there is no need to “repress” any emotions but just let them be and have their moment. Let us work with emotions as feedback, as tools for exploring our why? By allowing yourself to feel and not pass on judgement you can only become the better version of you and consequently …….
Make yourself feel better
- Positive attitude
Everything shall pass. I have shared the Persian fable over and over again.
When we don’t know how to resolve a situation, it is time to put our resolve to the test. The recommendation here is that what separates us from success is often our determination to achieve it.
- Get up
Shame and worry are natural, but beware! They can be a drag. Entering negative spirals of thought distracts and deviates you from your goal. If you detect that is what is happening to you, correct the course of your thoughts.
Ask yourself what is the best use of your time? Should you embrace this feeling or challenge it? “Nothing good worth having ever came easy” according to Theodore Roosevelt and he is right
- Gratitude
There is so much to learn. Often what happens to us is an opportunity to learn something new. Ken Wilber talks about the experience in the form of a spiral. The lessons are repeated and allow us to move forward. They are necessary to advance, to grow, and to develop
What you have learned to overcome unfavourable situations is a resource that you have at your disposal, the next time you need it. What helps you overcome difficulties and what can be re-used.
Go ahead, gather the necessary energy to go forward with determination and even enthusiasm and who knows what you might achieve
